La Rioja is a special land, gathering together the greatest variety of landscapes imaginable, ranging from the wild Demanda mountain range to the Oja-Tirón and Ebro valleys, from microclimates such as that around Enciso to itineraries of monuments such as the Way to Compostela.
The geography of La Rioja gives you the chance to play all types of sports in its natural surroundings: mountaineering, potholing, hangliding, canoeing, skiing, trekking, etc… La Rioja has traditionally been known for its hunting and fishing, sports as popular as they are possible in such an appropriate natural setting.
Festivities and folklore show the happiest side of the Riojan character. Wine culture is fundamental in Riojan festivities. The Harvest Festivities in Logroño (September 21st) and the Wine Battle in Haro are good examples of this. There are more festivities based on tradition, such as the Procession of the Hundred Maids of Sorzano and Santo Domingo (May 10th) which recalls a tribute of young women which the Christians had to pay the Moors. During the procession to Lomos de Orio (the Sunday after Easter) visitors are offered food by the village's inhabitants. Among the many interesting celebrations in La Rioja Baja the Robbery of the Saints in Arnedo (September 26th), with the struggle between Riojans and Navarrans for the image of San Cosme and San Damián, stands out. |
