The city of Bologna is located in the northern part of central Italy, and is the capital of the region of Emilia-Romagna. The city is well known for its rich gastronomy and, in particular, is famous for its pasta, sausage, cheese, wine and gelato. The city has many beautiful piazzas, and some splendid examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The University of Bologna is the oldest in Europe and, to this day, Bologna is a bustling university town with numerous cafes, bars and nightclubs. The city is sometimes referred to as "Red Bologna" because of its reputation for radical left wing politics.
The town's main square, and the adjacent Piazza del Nettuno were built in the 13th century and form the heart of the city.
The squares are lined with splendid Romanesque and Gothic structures including the church of San Petronio, Palazzo Re Enzo and the Palazzo Comunale. The squares bustle with activity, and socializing takes place in the numerous cafes that operate here. The famous Neptune Fountain, the symbol of the city, was built in 1566 and is located at the centre of Piazza del Nettuno. It is a favourite meeting place for both people and pigeons. |
