Just across the water lies Le Havre, accessed via the pont de Normandie. Just down the road are the towering white cliffs of Etretat.

Looking westwards, there are excellent opportunities for sightseeing. Bayeux, with its cathedral, tapestry, 1944 memorial museum and Charles de Gaulle museum, is renowned for its culture and history.

Caen boasts a war memorial, medieval castle of William the Conqueror, abbey and museum of fine arts. Nearby are the Normandy landing beaches of Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Sword Beach and Utah Beach. La Pointe du Hoc is home to the famous ranger memorial.

And of course, countless military cemeteries lie along this stretch of the coast, including one of the most important, the American cemetery at Colleville-St-Laurent (10 000 graves).

Arromanches, with its beach and D-Day museum, and Port-en-Bessin, Normandy`s largest port, are also worth visiting, not to mention the famous Mont St Michel and its bay, Avranches and Villedieu-les-Poeles.

The Normandy countryside is dotted with castles and manor houses dating back to the Middle Ages. If you fancy visiting Paris, or are travelling from Paris, stop off at Giverny, home to the Claude Monet and Impressionist Museum.
Around the Manor of Butin : Lisieux with its basilica; the historic town of Pont l`Eveque with its leisure activities and karting track; the romantic town of Cabourg ; Houlgate, with its 19th century architectural heritage; Deauville and Trouville, famous for their horses, horse racing, racecourse, polo, yearling auction, casinos and yachting ; last but not least, Honfleur, with its famous port, museums and the largest wooden church in France.
