The Ariège department with its rich cultural and culinary history is well known for it’s markets. Monday morning is market time in Mirepoix, situated all around the village’s Cathedral St. Maurice. The church is famous for possessing France’s largest nave.
With over 2500 km of river and waterways, the Ariège is a renowned and ideal water-sports paradise. Canoeing, rafting, fishing, horse back riding and of course walking are only few of the favourite activities in this region.
Parachuting is also possible at the small regional airport of Pamiers-les Pujols (only a 15 minute drive away). At Les Monts d’Olmes, enjoy the nearest winter skiing facilities (45 minute drive away). For those who like a more extensive skiing area visit Andorra (100 km from Mirepoix). You could combine a visit with some very attractive tax free shopping. Ax les Thermes, another ski resort, is en route to Andorra.
Golfers can choose between the Golf club of the Ariège, near la Bastide de Serou or the Golf club of Carcassonne. Both of these are situated within a short drive from Mirepoix. The Golf of Font Romeu is slightly further drive away.
Mirepoix is known for its social activities all year round; At Easter these activities kick off with a Jazz Festival followed by Medieval festivities in July. Europe’s largest Puppet Festival is in August and Fete de La Pomme in October.
If history interests you, there are many attractions to visit including the town of Mas d’ Azil, the Prehistoric Park, the Grottos of Niaux, Foix Castle, Camon’s Abbey or the Cathare Castles… Montsegur and Roque Fixade being two of the most famous.
Numerous walking and biking tours of various durations are available. Just ask at the Front Desk. Perhaps you want to go in search of the Pyrennian Bears or walk the Compostella Trail.
If you want to indulge in something other than these physical activities you could also spend time in and around the lovely vineyards close to Mirepoix. Enjoy a good glass at Chateau Pennautier or visit the cooperatives and their Caves. Le Sieur d’Arques in Limoux for example is world famous for both its Blanquette and its Cremant.
Alternatively, you can of course stay in the Hotel and enjoy its facilities. In summer we have a full and comprehensive poolside service and you can swim in the heart of the village in our comfortably heated pool.
Eat in the Ciel d’ Or Restaurant and enjoy Robert Abrahams classic French Cuisine. We incorporate natural, fresh products from the region with herbal, flower as well as other interesting influences and flavours.
