Hotel Convento de Sao Paulo is located on the slopes of the Serra d’Ossa mountain range between Estremoz and Redondo. It was constructed in 1182 by monks who needed a spiritual place in which to pray. Today, it is one of the most refined and comfortable hotels in Portugal.
The Convento de São Paulo has been visited by many illustrious figures over the centuries, most notably King Sebastian, King John IV and Catherine of Bragança, who married King Charles II of England in 1661. The hotel’s interior features an important collection of Portuguese Tiles – more than 54,000 in total – along with frescoes, low-relief terracottas and many other attractions such as a Florentine fountain depicting the four seasons and an ancient church classified as a national monument.
Renovated in 1993, the Convento de Sao Paulo is a four-star charm hotel. 23 of its current total of 27 rooms and suites are converted from the original monks’ cells, each with its own style and decoration and furnished with every modern comfort. All rooms are fully equipped with a private bathroom (fitted with locally-produced Estremoz marble), air-conditioning, satellite TV, video and music channels and direct-dial telephone.
Set in a 600-hectare estate, the Hotel Convento de Sao Paulo is ideal for those who enjoy walking and the perfect base from which to explore the unique landscape of the Serra D’Ossa Mountains.
