In the heart of interior Provence, the foothills of the Alps, Les Alpilles, offer natural scenery of exceptional beauty. A succession of long-established villages, each differing from its neighbors, from the little jewel of Eygalières, perched on the hilltops of what is reputedly the site of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to the magnificent village of Les Baux, the region is a treasure trove of wonderful cultural monuments set in idyllic countryside.
No-one passing through the area should miss a visit to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, whence their steps will necessarily continue on to Glanum, one of the biggest archaeological sites in the South of France.
Wheter enjoying a guided tour, or browsing alone, a visit to the archaeological museum, located in the handsome private residence of the de Sade family, is a must.
Still in the category of ancient remains, the Arc de Triomphe (dating back to 20 A.D.) and the Mausolée des Jules (30 to 20 B.C.) are absolutely astonishing. Saint-Rémy, also offers numerous religious edifices, monasteries, chapels, churches, and more… The monastery Saint-Paul de Mausolée, for instance, is truly a haven of peace and serenity. Is it any wonder that Vincent Van Gogh, who spent a year here (from May 1889 to May 1890), painted most of his major works during his stay? Don’t miss seeing the museum dedicated to the artist, the Centre d`Art Présence Van Gogh (situated in the Hotel Estrine)
A land of artists – and also the birthplace of Nostradamus – Saint Rémy is a maze of galleries, artists` workshops and exhibition places, a delight for connoisseurs and neophytes alike.
Not to forget Arles, the gateway of the Camargue, for its exceptional historical and archaeological assets, or perhaps Avignon, the city of the Popes.
The list goes on and on… in this region full of wonders.
