The Wine Trail |
|
The many caves in the Beaujolais open to visitors are quiet during the week, but lively on weekends, when people sit at wooden tables or bars tasting and discussing wines.
Starting at Beaujeu, where the huge, multi-roomed cellar has an effigy of Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of Charles XI and once ruler of the area, there are many short wine trails. The caves at Le Bois d`Oingt and Theize are both cooperatives, as is Liergues, with its ancient presses.
A drive to some of the more famous vineyards, producing the Beaujolais Villages and the ten crus, is particularly beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves turn colour and vendange is under way. The trail begins at Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin, whose château was embellished by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. From the Chapelle de Saint-Bonnet above the town, there is a panoramic view of the Saône valley. After pretty Saint-Julien, there is the Musée Claude Bernard, named after the famous physiologist who lived there. Further on, the road between medieval Salles-Arbuissonnas and Vaux becomes increasingly scenic.
The road descends into the valley via Charentay (with its romantic but dilapidated Château d`Arginy) towards Belleville`s 12th-century church. Once part of an extensive abbey, it is well worth a look inside before heading home.
